From the Inside: Why Community Matters When You're Houseless
"People think the trauma of homelessness begins when you lose your housing. But for many, it starts long before that—with the loss of support, options, stability, and the slow unraveling of everything familiar."
When you're houseless, you're not just without shelter—you’re suddenly disconnected from society. The trauma doesn’t begin on the streets. It begins before houselesness begins. Starting from the point when things began to unravel and the grip on reality becomes farther and farther away until it is so far out of reach that it appears nothing more than a memory.
You don't realize just how alone you are until once you're out there. You lose stability, the strength and support that comes from relationships found in community, and the sense of safety and security that comes from belonging.
"Many times the trauma experienced on the streets isn't from each other. After the initial shock passes of being houseless, you start to adapt. You learn how to survive in your new environment. The trauma experienced during and after this period mostly comes from the people who are not houseless. No rest. No peace. No justice. No hope."
